Sri Lanka claimed its first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow through para athlete Palitha Bandara, who finished second in the men's para discus throw competition. Competing in the F42-44/F61-64 category, Bandara achieved a throw of 46.84 metres, which secured the silver medal and established a new personal best for the Sri Lankan athlete.
Bandara, who trains under throwing coach Pradeep Nisantha, demonstrated strong technical execution in the final round to claim a position on the podium. The achievement represents a significant milestone for Sri Lanka's para-athletics programme at the Commonwealth Games.
This is Bandara's second Commonwealth Games medal, having previously earned a medal at the Birmingham edition. As an athlete from the Sri Lanka Army, Bandara continues to represent his country on the international para-sports stage, building on his track record of competitive success at major sporting events.
