Sri Lanka's Parliament held a moment of silence to honour veteran singer Nanda Malini, who passed away at age 82. The celebrated vocalist's seven-decade career left an indelible mark on Sinhala music.
Members of Parliament paid tribute to Nanda Malini through a moment of silence during today's session, following a proposal by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. The renowned vocalist and musician, who achieved the title of Visharad, died at her residence in Nawala at the age of 82, prompting a period of national mourning across the country.
Nanda Malini was born on August 23, 1943, and became one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated musical voices during her nearly seven-decade career. Her contributions to Sinhala music established her as a defining figure in the nation's cultural landscape. According to her family, members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their respects at her residence on Wijayaba Mawatha, Nawala, from 10 am on the day of her passing.
The final rites will take place over two days. Religious ceremonies are scheduled for 3:30 pm on Saturday, followed by the transfer of her remains to Borella Cemetery. In accordance with her final wishes, the last rites will be conducted at 5:00 pm at Borella Cemetery without a formal funeral ceremony.
