A parliamentary select committee has begun questioning senior police officials and a former MP about Sri Lanka's preparedness and response to Cyclone Ditwah.
A Parliamentary Select Committee chaired by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has commenced an inquiry into Sri Lanka's preparedness for Cyclone Ditwah by hearing testimony from senior law enforcement officials. The committee summoned Senior Superintendents of Police and Superintendents of Police from districts affected by the cyclone to provide accounts of their response efforts during the disaster.
Former Member of Parliament Nimal Piyatissa was also called to testify before the committee, specifically to address public comments he had made regarding measures taken during the cyclone response. The session forms part of a structured inquiry aimed at evaluating preparedness gaps and identifying improvements to future disaster response mechanisms.
The parliamentary committee, which includes members of Parliament alongside other officials, is tasked with completing a comprehensive study of the disaster response. Once the inquiry concludes, the committee is expected to submit findings and recommendations to Parliament to strengthen emergency preparedness protocols.
