The Colombo District Courts will remain closed on Monday following a partial collapse of the court premises on Saturday night, with all scheduled cases postponed to September 30.
The Colombo District Courts announced the suspension of operations for Monday, August 31, after a section of the court building collapsed during the weekend. The Colombo Law Society (CLS) issued an urgent notice regarding the closure, citing safety concerns at the premises.
According to CLS Secretary Lahiru Welgama, vehicle access to the court premises has been restricted due to the structural damage. All court cases scheduled for Monday have been rescheduled to September 30, 2026. The CLS cautioned both legal practitioners and members of the public against entering the affected areas of the building, warning that structural integrity may have been compromised.
The Law Society indicated that judges would issue further guidance regarding the continuation of court operations in the coming period. In the interim, requests for extensions of enjoining orders will be processed through applications submitted to the court registrar. The CLS committed to providing updates as the situation develops and assessments of the damage are completed.
