France defeated Norway 4-1 in their Group I match at the FIFA World Cup this morning, thanks to a stunning first-half hat-trick from Ousmane Dembele. With this dramatic victory, France topped their group and qualified for the next round.
Although both teams had already secured their place in the next round, France came out in full force as they could reduce the travel hassle between the North American match cities by topping their group.
On the other hand, Norway coach Stale Solbakken rested key players including star players Erling Haaland and captain Martin Odegaard for the match.
Match Summary:
Attack from the start: France's star player Kylian Mbappe's shot hit the post just 20 seconds into the match.
Dembele's dominance: Dembele, who received an incredible ball from Mbappe in the 6th minute of the match, deceived the defenders and scored the first goal. He then scored his second goal in the 20th minute with an assist from Mbappe.
Dembele and penalty disappointment in history:
After the 20th minute of the match, Norway's Thelo Oscar scored a goal to give France a comeback.
Historic achievement: However, Dembele scored his third goal in the 32nd minute of the match, becoming the third French player to score a hat-trick in World Cup history (only Just Fontaine and Mbappe had done this before). All three goals came in the space of 25 minutes.
Norway had a penalty in the second half, but Jørgen Strand Larsson's low shot was easily saved by France goalkeeper Mike Mignon.
A tribute to the coach:
Desire Touay headed home France's fourth goal in the dying minutes of the match after substitute Bradley Barkola's cross.
The French team's stunning victory was an emotional tribute to their coach Didier Deschamps' mother, who had returned to the country for her funeral and will rejoin the team today to plan for the next round of matches.
Next round matches:
Group winners France will face Sweden in the next round, while second-placed Norway will face Ivory Coast.
