Laura Bofills, the South Asia Regional Director for Sri Lanka and Afghanistan at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), met with Ira Chanakyan, Member of Parliament for the Sri Lanka Tamil Arasuk Party, and M.A. Sumanthiran, General Secretary, for an in-depth discussion.
During the meeting, an in-depth exchange of views took place on various important issues related to the current political situation in Sri Lanka and the long-term political aspirations of the Tamil people.
In particular, the need for meaningful implementation of power sharing, the need to expeditiously hold the long-overdue Provincial Council elections, human rights protection, accountability, transitional justice, democratic and good governance reforms, rule of law and reconciliation efforts were discussed in detail.
In addition, the political aspirations of the people of the North and East, their equality, fundamental rights, dignity and political representation were emphasized. It was also pointed out that political processes should be continuously carried out to achieve a just, dignified and sustainable political solution for all people in Sri Lanka.
