Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya met with India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and his delegation on Tuesday to explore avenues for deeper bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister's official residence Temple Trees, centred on Sri Lanka's education sector transformation and opportunities for enhanced academic partnerships.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister outlined the government's education reform agenda, highlighting initiatives in digital learning and expanding access to quality education. According to the Prime Minister's Media Division, both delegations discussed strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions, including student exchange programmes and joint research initiatives to foster greater academic cooperation between Sri Lanka and India.
Beyond education, the talks extended to broader areas of mutual interest. The two sides reviewed bilateral trade relations and identified possibilities to advance economic cooperation. Discussions also touched on promoting tourism and building stronger people-to-people connections between the nations. Both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening economic engagement for mutual benefit, the statement said.
The Indian delegation included High Commissioner Santosh Jha, Joint Secretary Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy High Commissioner Maitrey Kulkarni, and other officials. Sri Lanka's side was represented by senior government figures including Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri and Additional Secretary Sagarika Bogahawatta, along with representatives from the Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism ministries.
