Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has ordered officials to finish all development projects under the 2026 budget allocation within three months, emphasizing poverty eradication as a key objective.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has instructed government officials to complete all development initiatives funded through the 2026 budget allocations within the next three months. The directive was issued during a progress review meeting of the Colombo District Planning Committee held at the Colombo District Secretariat on Wednesday.
During the meeting, officials assessed the status of projects implemented across multiple programmes, including the Decentralized Budget Programme, Rural Road Development Programme, Praja Shakthi Poverty Eradication Programme, and a culture of sports initiative. The review also examined development work being carried out by various government institutions in the Colombo District, such as the Road Development Authority, Provincial Road Development Authority, Urban Development Authority, National Housing Development Authority, and the Department of Irrigation.
The Prime Minister stressed that identifying project delays and existing complications would enable officials to implement necessary corrective measures, ensuring the public receives the intended benefits without further postponements. She emphasized that poverty eradication should remain the central focus of development programmes and called for practical quality standards to guarantee their long-term effectiveness.
Additionally, Amarasuriya instructed officials to resolve administrative ambiguities regarding responsibility for certain infrastructure, including roads, lands, canals, and drainage systems. According to officials, the Department of Irrigation holds responsibility for canals and rivers under a Gazette notification. The Prime Minister directed that institutional responsibility clarifications be finalized to prevent future obstacles in project implementation.
