Authorities have implemented a curfew around Mahara Prison after violent unrest resulted in one inmate death and multiple injuries. Enhanced security measures including police, military, and aerial surveillance have been deployed to the area.
A police-enforced curfew has been put in place around Mahara Prison following a serious disturbance at the facility. Senior Deputy Inspector General Sajeewa Medawatta announced the measure, stating it was necessary to maintain law and order and protect public safety in the surrounding area.
The unrest at the prison resulted in at least one inmate fatality, with reports indicating that six individuals were hospitalized following the incident. Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent F.U. Wootler indicated that tensions among a group of prisoners escalated throughout the day, prompting intervention from law enforcement.
In response to the disturbance, authorities have significantly increased security presence in the region. Police officers and members of the Special Task Force were deployed to restore order within the prison complex. Additionally, Sri Lanka Army personnel have been stationed around the prison perimeter to reinforce security, while a Bell-412 helicopter from the Sri Lanka Air Force has been deployed for aerial surveillance and monitoring of the area. The curfew remains in effect until further notice.
