Police authorities have raised concerns over an increase in traffic accidents involving young drivers, urging parents to exercise greater caution when allowing teenagers to operate vehicles.

Sri Lanka Police have sounded an alarm over mounting road accidents among young drivers, attributing many incidents to excessive speed and reckless driving behaviour. Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler told media representatives that a substantial portion of recent accidents involve teenage drivers, with overspeeding consistently emerging as a primary factor in these collisions.

Authorities have stressed that parental responsibility plays a critical role in addressing the problem. ASP Wootler emphasized that parents who permit young teenagers to use vehicles must accept accountability for any resulting consequences. He further cautioned that legal measures alone cannot effectively combat overspeeding and dangerous driving habits among youth, signalling that the issue requires intervention beyond statutory enforcement.

The Police spokesman's remarks underscore a broader message: parents are being urged to maintain heightened vigilance when deciding whether to allow teenagers access to vehicles.
