Sri Lankan authorities have identified the groups responsible for clashes at three prisons that resulted in three deaths and dozens of injuries, with investigations underway and security measures being implemented.

Sri Lanka Police have identified the inmate groups responsible for initiating violent clashes at Kuruwita, Pallansena, and New Magazine prisons on August 6 and 7. The Department of Prisons confirmed that identified inmates are being transferred to other facilities as part of response measures to contain the unrest.

The incidents claimed three lives, with police noting that two of the deceased bore gunshot wounds. An additional 54 people sustained injuries during the clashes. The violence has left significant damage at Kuruwita Prison, where inmates destroyed cell roofs during the August 7 disturbance. The structural damage poses particular challenges given the region's heavy rainfall, complicating efforts to house prisoners in the affected areas.

Authorities have intensified their response to the incidents. Investigations were conducted at Kuruwita Prison under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General of Police Renuka Jayasundara for the Ratnapura Division. Security at the facility has been strengthened following the unrest. The Department of Prisons has also suspended visitation at the affected prisons temporarily while the situation remains under review.

The identification of the responsible groups represents a step toward restoring order at the facilities, though the extent of physical damage and the need for prisoner transfers indicate the scale of disruption caused by the clashes.
