An Inspector and Constable from Sainthamaruthu Police Station have been remanded in custody after their arrest by anti-corruption authorities on charges of soliciting and accepting a bribe.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has arrested two officers from Sainthamaruthu Police Station on allegations of demanding and accepting Rs. 20,000 in bribes. According to the authorities, the Inspector and Constable sought the payment in connection with a drug-related arrest involving crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as "ice."

The officers allegedly offered to use their official positions to provide preferential treatment in exchange for the bribe. Specifically, they are accused of agreeing to underreport the quantity of drugs seized, recording only 70 milligrams of heroin rather than the full amount allegedly found. Additionally, the officers reportedly promised to refrain from taking further legal action against the suspect and allow continued operations without interference.

Both officers were taken into custody on August 17, 2026. The Inspector was arrested at Periyanilavanai Police Station, while the Constable was apprehended near Zahira College in Kalmunai. Following their arrest, they appeared before the Kalmunai Magistrate's Court, which ordered them remanded in custody until August 28 as investigations continue.
