The Sri Lanka Police has issued comprehensive safety guidance for individuals using taxi services, responding to reports of criminal activity within the sector. According to Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler, the advisory addresses concerns about crimes including theft, robbery and intimidation allegedly perpetrated by taxi drivers or their associates.
The police recommend several protective measures before and during journeys. Passengers are advised to verify basic details such as the vehicle's registration number, model and driver's name prior to travel. Those travelling at night should exercise particular caution if a driver deviates from expected routes or enters unfamiliar or isolated areas. The police also emphasize the importance of sharing live location data through mobile phones or mapping applications with trusted contacts, ensuring someone monitors their whereabouts until arrival at their destination.
Additional warnings focus on personal safety during transit. Passengers should refrain from accepting food, drinks or water from unfamiliar individuals, as police have documented cases where passengers allegedly lost consciousness after consuming such items. The advisory also counsels against displaying valuable items including cash, electronics and jewellery that may attract criminal attention.
Individuals experiencing suspicious circumstances or feeling threatened are encouraged to contact the Police Emergency Service at 119 or the Emergency Information Service at 118, providing vehicle details and incident information. The guidance extends to taxi drivers as well, with police reminding the transport sector of their responsibility to maintain proper conduct and passenger safety standards.
