Sri Lanka Police are investigating the death of 61-year-old former Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando, whose body was discovered in his Colombo apartment on Wednesday morning. Preliminary findings suggest he died by suicide.
The body of former Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando was found on the eighth floor of a residential complex in Thimbirigasyaya on Wednesday morning. According to Sri Lanka Police, initial investigations suggest he died after hanging himself using a necktie attached to a door in the apartment.
Two investigative teams have been deployed to conduct further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death. The investigations are being overseen by the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Colombo South Division. Police stated that another individual had been staying at the apartment with Fernando but had travelled to Hambantota on Tuesday.
The discovery came after the individual attempted to contact Fernando by telephone on Wednesday morning but received no response. The individual then requested that a cleaning staff member check the apartment, during which the body was found. Fernando was 61 years old at the time of his death.
Police indicated that further investigations are ongoing to establish all details surrounding the incident. No additional information has been released regarding potential contributing factors or other circumstances.
