Sri Lankan police have established an email address for public reports of Facebook groups distributing obscene images of women and children, as authorities work to combat the growing circulation of such material including AI-generated videos.
The Police Computer Crime Investigation Division has introduced a dedicated email address, dir.cid@police.gov.lk, to enable members of the public to report Facebook groups engaged in sharing obscene and exploitative content. The move comes as authorities report an increase in the distribution of such material, encompassing both conventional images and AI-generated videos that violate the privacy and dignity of women and children.
In tandem with the reporting initiative, police have begun active enforcement measures targeting those responsible for operating and maintaining these groups. Officials stated that steps are underway to identify and disable the relevant Facebook groups and to apprehend individuals involved in distributing the content.
As part of recent enforcement action, a 21-year-old man was arrested in the Beliatta area by officers from the Police Bureau for the Prevention and Investigation of Abuse of Children and Women. The suspect allegedly operated multiple Facebook groups used to publish obscene images of women and children. His mobile phone was seized as evidence, and investigations into his activities are ongoing.
The police have urged the public to provide information about suspected individuals engaged in such activities. Complaints can be directed to the Computer Crime Investigation Division via telephone at 011 2381058 or through the newly established email channel.
