A detailed investigation is underway in the Thiravandiyamodu area of the Kalmunai Headquarters Police Division in Ampara District, regarding a 44-year-old man who allegedly obstructed the police in their duties and attempted to snatch their firearm. Following a complaint received by the 119 emergency service, a sergeant and a constable from the Kalmunai Headquarters Police Station went to the scene on a motorcycle on the night of the incident and conducted investigations. At that time, the suspect allegedly attacked and injured the police officers and attempted to snatch their firearm. Additional police officers who rushed to the scene on information recovered the firearm and the injured police officers were admitted to the Kalmunai Base Hospital. The suspect, who fled after the incident, was later arrested and brought to the police station. Police sources say that during initial investigations, he stated that he had joined the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2000 and had left the organization following a split in the organization in 2004. Furthermore, during the investigation, it was revealed that the suspect, who was intoxicated at the time of the incident, had snatched the policeman’s gun and talked about how to operate it, and had mockingly asked, “Who trained you?” Police are continuing to conduct further investigations from various angles regarding the suspect, who is married and has three children.
