The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Awareness Event, jointly organized by the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board of the Ministry of Public Safety and Parliamentary Affairs and the District Secretariat, was held yesterday (26.06.2026) at 3.00 p.m. at the District Secretariat Auditorium under the leadership of Mr. Maradalingam Pratheepan. Speaking on the occasion, the District Government Agent said that today is observed as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking from 26th June to 3rd July. He said that there is a need for everyone to take responsibility for implementing anti-drug projects and in this regard, His Excellency the President has launched the "Whole Country Together" (Rattama Ekatta) National Program against Drug Abuse in the Jaffna District and that activities related to this are being carried out at the district level. He said that in the past, drug control measures have been taken at every reform control level. However, it is confirmed that there are increasing levels of drug use and increasing suicide incidents in some places. He further said that the progressive activities related to drug prevention are a welcome thing and if its use is to be controlled, there is a need to control the routes through which drugs enter the country, and realizing that responsibility, programs are being carried out at the national level, and based on that, a position has been reached to control drugs at the district level through the Crime Prevention, Drug Prevention and Special Action Committee. He also expressed his gratitude for the efforts being made to carry out rehabilitation activities against drugs using the resources available in hospitals and drug rehabilitation centers. He said that the Regional Director of Health Services will provide adequate instructions regarding the misuse of medicines by the public, and that the Regional Director of Health Services will provide adequate instructions regarding the dispensing of dangerous medicines in pharmacies, and that there is a need for pharmacies to carry out their activities in accordance with the laws, and that there are cases where legal action can be taken when mistakes occur, and that the dispensing of medicines without prescriptions is a common issue and needs to be changed, and that the Regional Director of Health Services will provide instructions regarding the proper recording of dangerous medicines after dispensing them in the inventory register. Similarly, attention should be paid to expired products, a proper mechanism should be implemented regarding the expiration date, and everyone should cooperate in taking appropriate measures in this regard in the Jaffna district, and everyone has made a significant contribution even in extraordinary circumstances, and pharmacies have been performing a very difficult task even during times of shortage, and proper attention should be paid to narcotic pills. The global drug problem, ongoing problems, new challenges, and new solutions were discussed. Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Ketheeswaran, provided instructions to pharmacy owners and pharmacists regarding pharmacy control methods, and Mrs. Siyamini, District Coordinator of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, also provided an explanation by displaying various and dangerous drugs. Finally, stickers were given to pharmacy owners and pharmacists on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Sivakaran, Regional Director of Health Services Dr. Ketheeswaran, psychiatrists, health medical officers, Divisional Secretaries, Assistant Divisional Secretaries, Police officers, Excise Department officers, Jaffna Teaching Hospital officers, National Dangerous Drugs Control Board Coordinator, Food and Drug Inspectors, Divisional Secretariat Women Development Officers, Department of Social Reforms officers, pharmacy owners and pharmacists, district coordinators, representatives of non-governmental organizations, preventive treatment and rehabilitation teams and many others.
