A technical officer at Alayadivembu Pradeshiya Sabha was arrested following allegations that he solicited approximately Rs. 140,000 from a complainant in connection with local development projects.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption apprehended a technical officer from Alayadivembu Pradeshiya Sabha on Tuesday afternoon based on corruption allegations. The arrest took place around 1:55 pm at the complainant's business premises in Akkarapattu.
According to the Bribery Commission, the officer is alleged to have solicited Rs. 40,000 in bribes from a member of the public. The funds were reportedly demanded in two separate instalments of Rs. 20,000 each, purportedly linked to drainage construction work at a public playground and the release of retention money owed for a shop construction project in the Akkarapattu area.
The allegations extend beyond the bribery charges. The suspect is also accused of demanding Rs. 100,000 from the same complainant as a purported loan, and subsequently received a cheque for that amount. This additional transaction brings the total value of funds allegedly obtained to approximately Rs. 140,000.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Akkarapattu Magistrate's Court to face the charges. The case represents another instance of alleged corruption at the local government level in Sri Lanka, adding to ongoing scrutiny of officials' conduct in pradeshiya sabhas across the country.
