Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has held discussions with a visiting US congressional delegation, requesting continued American backing for the country's economic development and institutional strengthening.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa met with a delegation from the US House of Representatives led by Democratic Representative Chrissy Houlahan in Colombo this week to discuss bilateral cooperation. The discussions centered on economic partnership, governance structures, education initiatives and regional security concerns.

Premadasa emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining US engagement in Sri Lanka's economic framework and acknowledged recent American assistance to the country. He highlighted the historical significance of preferential trade arrangements granted during the tenure of former President Ranasinghe Premadasa, noting that such access had substantially contributed to the development of Sri Lanka's apparel sector, generating employment and boosting export revenues.

During the meeting, both sides explored avenues for strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing transparency and accountability measures, and expanding educational access across the country. The discussions also touched upon creating sustainable economic opportunities to support long-term development. Houlahan confirmed that the United States remains committed to supporting democratic governance, economic stability and ongoing engagement with Sri Lanka.

The delegation and Premadasa concluded their talks by reaffirming a mutual commitment to deepening the bilateral relationship between the two nations across multiple sectors.
