President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced seven key development priorities for 2027, with plans to increase capital expenditure to Rs. 2 trillion while reducing recurrent spending as part of a broader economic restructuring.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake outlined the Government's strategic priorities for 2027 during a meeting in Galle District, emphasizing a significant reallocation of public resources toward development initiatives. The administration plans to reduce recurrent expenditure currently at 9% of the budget while raising capital expenditure from 4% to accommodate approximately Rs. 2 trillion in development spending—representing a roughly 40% increase from current levels.

Among the administration's stated priorities is the digitalization of government services, aimed at improving efficiency and enabling citizens to access services remotely. The President also indicated the Government is considering extending retirement ages in selected sectors to retain experienced professionals within the public service, though specific sectors were not detailed.

The President emphasized job creation and economic growth as central to the development agenda, with plans to build an outward-oriented economy offering greater employment opportunities for young people. Sports and youth development have also been flagged for increased resource allocation, which the administration views as instrumental in addressing social challenges including drug abuse.

During the meeting, the President highlighted ongoing anti-drug operations in the district, noting that 12,608 raids have been conducted under the "Ratama Ekata" operation since October 2025, resulting in the seizure of 119.6 kilograms of illicit drugs. The address also reviewed progress on various district-level initiatives including housing programmes, water supply schemes, rural infrastructure development, waste management, and efforts to position Galle as a major tourism and economic center.
