The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested a school principal in the Galle district on Monday for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes totaling Rs.250,000 in connection with student admissions.
A principal at a school in Rumassala, Unawatuna, was taken into custody on Monday by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. According to the Bribery Commission, the suspect, identified as a resident of Ahangama, had solicited payments from a parent seeking to enroll two children at the institution.
The commission reported that the principal initially demanded Rs.600,000 for admitting the children to Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2026. The requested amount was subsequently reduced to Rs.300,000. The complaint alleges that after receiving an initial payment of Rs.150,000, the principal continued to demand additional funds and threatened to remove the children from the school if the money was not provided.
The arrest occurred while the principal was accepting a further Rs.250,000 from the complainant at a shop in Habaraduwa, Galle. The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate's Court following the arrest.
