Authorities have arrested a 53-year-old prison guard following an investigation into an alleged drug supply network operating at Magazine Prison, with police seizing significant quantities of narcotics during the operation.
A prison guard has been arrested after police uncovered what they describe as a drug delivery operation at Magazine Prison. The Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau initiated the investigation when officers apprehended a 32-year-old man in the Mount Lavinia area carrying approximately 100 grams of ice and 20 grams of heroin, with an estimated street value of nearly Rs. 2 million.
During questioning, the arrested man revealed that an inmate at Magazine Prison had contacted him via WhatsApp with instructions to collect the drug package from a designated location. The drugs were subsequently intended to be handed over to another person on Wanatha Road in Borella, according to police statements.
Police arranged a controlled operation at the Borella location, where a man in prison sports attire allegedly approached to collect the package. Officers monitoring the operation arrested the individual, who was identified as a 53-year-old prison guard stationed at Magazine Prison. The guard, a resident of Beliatta in Tangalle, began working at Magazine Prison in January and previously served at Welikada Prison. The initial suspect, a 32-year-old from Waidya in Dehiwala, was also taken into custody.
Both individuals remain under investigation by the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau as authorities work to establish the full scope of the alleged operation and any other individuals involved.
