Authorities have arrested a 53-year-old prison officer accused of supplying drugs to inmates at Magazine Prison in Borella, with police recovering narcotics valued at over Rs. 2 million during the operation.

A prison officer has been taken into custody following an investigation into alleged drug trafficking at Magazine Prison in Borella. According to police, the arrest was made by the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau after officers recovered 100 grams of crystal methamphetamine and 20 grams of heroin, with an estimated street value exceeding Rs. 2 million.

The investigation began when a 32-year-old man from Dehiwala was detained in Mount Lavinia in possession of narcotics. During questioning, the suspect allegedly disclosed that he had received location details through a WhatsApp message from an inmate at Magazine Prison. Police say the drugs were meant to be transferred to another person at Wanatha Road in Borella.

Based on this information, officers conducted a surveillance operation at the specified location. The 53-year-old prison officer, reportedly dressed in prison sports attire, arrived at the scene and collected the drug package from the first suspect before being apprehended by waiting officers. Prison records indicate the officer, a resident of Beliatta in Tangalle, began work at Magazine Prison in January and had previously been stationed at Welikada Prison.

The Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau, led by Chief Inspector Nilantha Gamage, continues to investigate the alleged drug supply network connecting the prison facility to outside distributors.
