Sri Lankan authorities investigate online network trafficking intimate images of women and children

The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has launched an investigation into alleged social media groups engaged in buying and selling private photographs and sexual content of women and children, with the matter now referred to law enforcement agencies.

The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has initiated a formal investigation into an alleged online trafficking operation centered on social media platforms, particularly Facebook, where private photographs and sexual content involving women and children are reportedly being bought and sold for financial gain. The issue gained public attention following recent posts and videos shared by social media activists highlighting the problem.

According to preliminary findings reviewed by the Ministry, individuals operating through fake accounts have been selling intimate images and videos of people they know personally. In some documented cases, perpetrators allegedly attempted to distribute or sell material featuring female family members. The investigation has also revealed that certain groups operating these transactions are based overseas, complicating efforts to pursue those responsible.

Following its initial inquiry, the Ministry referred its findings to the Police Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women and the Computer Crime Investigation Division for further investigation and enforcement action. Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of the matter and indicated that urgent interventions are underway to prevent additional exploitation and hold perpetrators accountable.

In response, the Ministry has issued guidance to parents and guardians, urging heightened vigilance regarding children's social media usage and their online interactions. The Ministry stressed that exploitation can occur even within home environments and called on families to implement protective measures. Support services are available through toll-free helplines 1938 and 1929, which offer psychosocial counselling, legal assistance, and other support to affected individuals and families.
