The government has launched an initiative to transform Delft Island into Sri Lanka's first Zero Emission eco-tourism destination, combining sustainable development with preservation of its historical and natural heritage.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Professor Ruwan Ranasinghe visited Delft Island to assess its tourism potential and advance the government's plan to develop it as a flagship sustainable destination. The visit included consultations with local stakeholders, observation of key attractions, and discussions on enhancing visitor experiences while addressing development challenges specific to the Northern Province location.

Delft Island possesses distinctive features that position it as a promising tourism destination, including well-preserved Dutch-era ruins, numerous archaeological sites, and wild horses that roam freely across the landscape. According to the Deputy Minister, despite these exceptional attractions, the island has contributed only minimally to Sri Lanka's tourism sector to date. The government's vision encompasses attracting both international and domestic visitors to the largely undeveloped destination.

The proposed development strategy prioritizes environmental sustainability as its foundation, with plans to establish renewable energy systems and eliminate carbon emissions from tourism operations. Infrastructure improvements identified as necessary include enhanced water supply systems, road development, and better transportation accessibility. Local community participation forms another critical component, with plans to strengthen hospitality skills among residents to ensure they benefit economically from tourism growth.

The initiative brought together government officials from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and Tourism Promotion Bureau, local political representatives including Jaffna District Member of Parliament Ilankumaran Karunanathan, and community members. Officials emphasized that the development approach would balance economic benefits with cultural heritage preservation and environmental conservation, positioning Delft Island as a model for responsible tourism practices in Sri Lanka.
