Prime Minister Harini Amarasooriya has stated that the number of dengue patients in the country has increased due to the spread of the new dengue virus.

Special dengue eradication activities are being carried out in many parts of the country today (27.06.2026).

In this context, he further stated regarding the spread of dengue,

Despite the increase in the spread of dengue due to the impact of the new virus, we had implemented a special eradication program. Currently, there has been a slight decrease in the spread of mosquitoes.

The Colombo district is the most affected by dengue. Its spread is particularly high in Maharagama and the suburbs of Colombo.

Dengue mosquito breeding sites have been found to be more common in public places, especially schools, office complexes and dilapidated vacant lands, than in homes.

However, when any cleaning activities are carried out on those vacant lands, their owners are demanding their rights.

He also stated that dengue mosquito breeding has been identified in places where construction work has begun and then stopped halfway.
