Sri Lankan authorities have begun coordinated raids targeting manufacturers and retailers of substandard motorcycle helmets lacking proper certification, warning that such headgear poses serious safety risks.
The National Council for Road Safety has initiated enforcement operations against the production and distribution of motorcycle helmets that fail to meet Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLS) certification requirements. The initiative involves collaboration between the road safety authority, the standards institution, and the Consumer Affairs Authority to identify non-compliant products across the country.
Manjula Kularatne, Chairman of the National Council for Road Safety, stated that legal action will be pursued against those found manufacturing or selling substandard helmets discovered during the operations. He emphasized that the use of uncertified headgear carries equivalent safety risks to wearing no helmet at all, making compliance with certification standards a critical public health matter.
Authorities are urging riders to ensure their helmets display the SLS mark, indicating they have undergone proper testing and meet established safety specifications. The enforcement drive represents an effort to improve road safety by removing dangerous products from circulation and establishing greater consumer awareness regarding helmet standards.
