Sri Lanka Railways has issued a circular prohibiting employees from using social media during working hours and disclosing sensitive operational information, citing concerns over institutional credibility and passenger safety.
Sri Lanka Railways has implemented a new policy aimed at controlling social media activity among its workforce and preventing the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information related to railway operations. The department attributed the measure to what it described as a growing pattern of officers and employees sharing confidential operational details on social media platforms during work hours.
According to the Railway Department, the unauthorized disclosure of such information poses significant risks to the organization's reputation, passenger safety, and internal discipline. The circular, issued under the authority of the General Manager of Railways, designates only three categories of personnel as authorized to communicate official information to external parties or media outlets: the General Manager, the department's official spokesperson, and the Information Officer.
The policy establishes clear consequences for non-compliance, with the department warning that strict legal action will be pursued against officers found to have violated the circular's provisions. The move reflects broader institutional concerns about information management within the railway service and attempts to establish a centralized communications framework.
