The Department of Meteorology has issued warnings for multiple provinces expecting rainfall and gusty winds today, with coastal areas facing rough seas and potential inundation risks.
Several districts across Sri Lanka are forecast to experience rain and thunderstorms on August 31st, according to the Department of Meteorology. The Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces face the most significant rainfall, with showers expected in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Light showers may also develop in the North-western province, while the Uva province and Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts could see thundershowers developing after 2 p.m. The remainder of the island is expected to remain largely dry.
Wind conditions will pose additional concerns, particularly in elevated and northern areas. The Department of Meteorology warns of fairly strong winds ranging from 30-40 kilometers per hour across the Western slopes of the Central hills, North-central and North-western provinces, and in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts. The public has been advised to take precautions against potential damage from strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
Coastal and maritime areas face heightened risks from sea conditions. Showers are expected across sea areas from Chilaw to Hambantota, with southwesterly winds of 30-40 kmph intensifying to 50-60 kmph in zones extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Rough seas are anticipated off the Hambantota to Pottuvil coast, while wave heights may reach 2.0-3.0 meters between Puttalam and Pottuvil. The Department of Meteorology has warned of potential seawater inundation in nearshore areas from Chilaw to Matara, urging naval, fishing and coastal communities to remain alert.
