The Sri Lanka Bar Association has issued a special statement regarding the arrest of former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa’s son, Attorney-at-Law Rahitha Rajapaksa. The association has clarified that they did not make any representation in court on behalf of Attorney-at-Law Rahitha Rajapaksa, who was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission. The Sri Lanka Bar Association has issued a statement in this regard today. It has stated that reports in some media outlets that submissions were made on behalf of the association during the hearings held at the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday are completely false. The statement pointed out that the limited role of the Bar Association is to monitor the joint court proceedings in legal matters involving its members and to submit a report to the association for further action. Furthermore, the Sri Lanka Bar Association has categorically stated that its executive committee has not authorized any lawyer to appear and make submissions on behalf of the association during the trial, and that no decision has been taken to appear for the arrested lawyers.
