Fishermen in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu have begun an indefinite strike demanding the release of 18 colleagues detained by the Sri Lankan Navy and compensation for seized vessels.
Fishermen in the Indian port town of Rameshwaram commenced an indefinite strike on August 30 to protest the detention of 18 Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. According to S. Emerit, president of the local fishermen's association, two separate incidents led to the detentions: nine fishermen and their boat were arrested on July 22, while another nine fishermen and vessel were held following an expedition on July 12.
The strike has gained support from mechanised boat operators at Rameshwaram port who have halted their activities. Beyond securing the immediate release of the detained fishermen and their boats, protesters are calling for financial compensation from both the Tamil Nadu and central governments for fishing vessels seized or damaged by Sri Lankan authorities between 2018 and 2026. Emerit stressed that such compensation is vital for affected families to maintain their livelihoods.
The fishermen's association has also appealed to both Indian and Sri Lankan governments to restart formal dialogue, noting that negotiations have stalled for over a decade. They argue that resuming talks and establishing a permanent agreement is necessary to prevent further arrests in traditional fishing grounds. The Tamil Nadu state government and Chief Minister have already engaged with central authorities to push for intervention in the matter.
Escalating their campaign, fishermen's organisations plan to launch a joint indefinite hunger strike near Valasai bus stand in Thangachimadam beginning September 1 until their demands are addressed. The collective action underscores mounting frustration over recurring maritime incidents affecting Tamil Nadu's fishing community.
