Veteran lyricist and arts patron Rathna Sri Wijesinghe has resigned as Chairman of the National Library and Documentation Services Board, citing personal reasons related to his age.
Rathna Sri Wijesinghe, a prominent figure in Sri Lankan songwriting and cultural affairs, has announced his resignation from his role as Chairman of the National Library and Documentation Services Board. The move comes after a lengthy career contributing to the nation's arts and literary sectors.
Wijesinghe attributed his decision to personal circumstances, particularly his advancing age. In a statement, he emphasized that the resignation was entirely personal in nature and did not reflect any difficulties with the current administration. "My confidence in the President and the government remains intact, and I will continue to extend my support to them," he said, clarifying that no disputes with officials prompted his departure.
The resignation takes effect on August 11, 2026. Despite stepping down from his formal institutional role, Wijesinghe indicated his intention to maintain his broader involvement in supporting government initiatives.
