The affected zones are expected to experience very rough seas accompanied by extremely strong gusts reaching 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, conditions the department has deemed severe enough to warrant restrictions on maritime activity.
Naval personnel and fishing communities operating in the red warning zone have been instructed to avoid these waters entirely until the alert is lifted. The advisory represents a precautionary measure aimed at protecting lives and vessels from potentially dangerous weather patterns developing in the Indian Ocean region.
Beyond the red warning area, a broader section of the western and southwestern coast also faces deteriorating conditions. Sea areas from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo are forecast to experience rough conditions with strong gusty winds between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour. While less severe than the red warning zone, this orange alert still suggests caution for maritime activities in these waters.
The Department of Meteorology has urged all maritime stakeholders to maintain heightened vigilance and monitor subsequent weather updates closely.
