The body of 45-year-old model Chulpadmendra Kumarapathirana has been transferred to a Borella funeral parlour while police investigate her unexpected death at a businessman's residence in Piliyandala on August 31.
The remains of model and pageant industry figure Chulpadmendra Kumarapathirana have been moved to a private funeral parlour in Borella as authorities continue their investigation into her death. The 45-year-old was discovered unresponsive on a bed at a house in Thumbowila, Piliyandala on August 31, following an event she had organised in Battaramulla the previous day. Police confirmed she had travelled to the residence, which belongs to a businessman with whom she maintained a romantic relationship, in the early morning hours.
When attempts to wake her failed around 12:45 p.m., emergency services were contacted. Medical personnel confirmed her death upon arrival. According to police reports, a bloodstain was observed on the bedsheet where she had been sleeping. Both the businessman and Chulpadmendra's mother subsequently filed separate complaints with authorities, prompting a formal investigation.
Following court proceedings before the Kesbewa Magistrate's Court, an acting magistrate inspected the scene and the deceased's body. A post-mortem examination conducted at Kalubowila Teaching Hospital by a Judicial Medical Officer yielded an open verdict, with examiners finding no external or internal injuries on the body. Samples and tissue portions have been forwarded to the Government Analyst for forensic analysis to determine the cause of death.
Chulpadmendra Kumarapathirana was a recognised figure in Sri Lanka's modelling and pageant sectors, having been involved in industry events and notably connected to a 2021 incident involving former Mrs. World Caroline Jurie and Mrs. Sri Lanka Pushpika de Silva. The exact circumstances surrounding her death remain undetermined pending laboratory results.
