The Virgo Transport 8 lost contact while traveling through the Java Sea on Sunday after encountering severe weather. Rescue operations have recovered more than 100 people with one confirmed dead, while the fate of approximately 125 to 140 others remains uncertain.
An Indonesian passenger vessel disappeared in the Java Sea on Sunday after experiencing bad weather during a journey from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. The Virgo Transport 8, which departed Saturday morning, lost contact with its operator early Sunday, prompting immediate search and rescue mobilization by Indonesia's Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office.
Rescue teams have successfully evacuated more than 100 passengers and crew members from the vessel. One person who was rescued has been confirmed dead, and another was reported injured. The Search and Rescue agency noted that rescue personnel encountered challenging conditions, including waves reaching up to 2.5 metres in height, during their response operations. The ship's last known position was reported approximately 80 to 150 kilometres from Banjarmasin, with exact distance figures varying slightly between sources.
The total number of people aboard the vessel and those still unaccounted for remains subject to ongoing verification. Initial reports indicated 243 people were aboard, with subsequent figures ranging from 125 to 140 people still missing as of Sunday. Authorities acknowledged that passenger information was being reconciled, suggesting discrepancies in the confirmed manifest. Search and rescue teams deployed multiple vessels, personnel, and helicopter assets to the vessel's last known position to continue recovery operations.
As an archipelago of 17,000 islands, Indonesia relies substantially on maritime transport, with ferry services providing more accessible alternatives to air travel for many communities.
