Four suspects have been arrested and remanded over the alleged assault of two students from a technical college in Kurunegala following an incident that was circulated on social media, in which the victims were reportedly attacked after refusing to hand over Rs. 100. According to the police, the incident occurred on 25 June 2026. The two 19-year-old students, who were residing in Bamunugedara while studying at Wayamba Tech Technical College, were allegedly assaulted following an argument on the way to their hostel. The injured students were admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for treatment. Police said two investigation teams were deployed following complaints received over the incident, leading to the arrest of four suspects on 30 June. The suspects, aged 19, 24 and 25, are residents of Gepallawa, Weerambugedara and Uhumiya. They were produced before the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court on 1 July and were remanded until 15 July. The suspects have been charged with attempting to forcibly obtain money as members of an unlawful assembly and causing injuries to two persons. A TVS motorcycle allegedly used by the suspects has also been produced before court as evidence. Further investigations are being conducted by the Kurunegala Police. (Newswire)
