A state-of-the-art mammography machine worth Rs. 153 million has been delivered to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital as part of a broader initiative to strengthen cancer detection capabilities across Sri Lanka's health system.
Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital has received an advanced mammography machine valued at Rs. 153 million, aimed at improving early detection of breast cancer and reducing examination waiting times. The equipment is expected to enable faster diagnosis and more accurate identification of breast abnormalities, allowing the hospital to process examinations and generate diagnostic reports more quickly and refer patients for treatment without unnecessary delays.
The installation forms part of a wider health sector modernisation programme directed by Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa. Under this initiative, five identical mammography machines, each valued at Rs. 153 million, are being distributed to major hospitals across the country: the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo, Karapitiya National Hospital in Galle, Kandy National Hospital, Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, and Apeksha Hospital. The combined investment totals Rs. 765 million.
The Health System Enhancement Project and the Asian Development Bank have jointly financed the procurement of these machines. The Ministry of Health and Mass Media has coordinated the project through its National Cancer Control Programme to strengthen diagnostic infrastructure and improve the overall quality and efficiency of cancer detection and treatment services nationwide.
