The renovated Bambalapitiya Railway Station was formally reopened on September 10, 2026, following a five-month upgrade funded through a public-private partnership with Sri Lanka's Dawoodi Bohra community.
The Bambalapitiya Railway Station reopened for public use on September 10, 2026, after undergoing comprehensive renovations completed within five months of work beginning in March. The Rs. 60 million upgrade was funded by Sri Lanka's Dawoodi Bohra community as part of a public-private partnership model. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya attended the reopening ceremony, alongside Transport and Highways Minister Bimal Ratnayake, railway officials and community representatives.
The renovation addressed multiple aspects of station infrastructure, including improvements to the main building, Platforms 1 and 2, sanitation facilities, electricity and water services, CCTV systems, and a newly constructed footbridge connecting the main road to the railway line. The project was implemented under the Government's Clean Sri Lanka initiative and forms part of the broader Dream Destination national programme, which aims to modernise 100 railway stations across the country.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasised the project as a model of civic partnership, stating that "a clean Sri Lanka is built through shared responsibility, where communities contribute, the Government facilitates and public institutions maintain with pride." A Dawoodi Bohra community representative characterised the initiative as reflecting the community's nearly two-century presence in Sri Lanka and its commitment to public service. Approximately 2,500 Dawoodi Bohra community members currently reside in the country, and the community indicated its continued involvement in social and civic initiatives spanning healthcare, education, and environmental responsibility.
