The government has committed Rs. 600 million to renovate a section of the Peradeniya–Badulla–Chenkaladi road, with completion expected within six months, focusing on safety improvements and tourism development.
The Ministry of Road Development has announced a Rs. 600 million investment to upgrade the Hali Ela–Badulla stretch of the Peradeniya–Badulla–Chenkaladi road network. Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Dinindu Saman Hennayake made the announcement following a road inspection tour on 11 August, stating that the project aims to be completed within six months.
The renovation initiative extends beyond standard resurfacing work. According to the Deputy Minister, the development will incorporate pedestrian platforms, marked crossings, and protective fencing to address safety concerns on a section identified as having high accident rates. Officials from the Road Development Authority participated in the inspection alongside Hali Ela Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Priyantha Varushamana.
The project carries dual objectives of infrastructure improvement and economic development. The Deputy Minister emphasized that beautification and urban development efforts will benefit both Hali Ela and Badulla towns, particularly given their significance as tourist destinations. Hennayake noted that construction planning has prioritized environmental conservation, with special care taken at locations requiring targeted improvements.
The Deputy Minister characterized this investment as part of broader efforts by the Ministry to allocate significant resources to Badulla District. He stated that the funds would be deployed effectively to enhance public welfare in the region.
