Sri Lanka's Ministry of Defence has released an additional Rs. 75 million to assist communities affected by recent heavy rainfall and severe weather across multiple districts, with over 11,800 people impacted.
The Ministry of Defence has announced the disbursement of Rs. 75 million in supplementary funding to support relief efforts for residents affected by floods and landslides in nine districts across the country. According to Additional Secretary A.G. Dharmathilaka, the affected areas span 56 Divisional Secretariat divisions in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Matara, Ratnapura, Trincomalee, Hambantota, and Puttalam.
Data from the Disaster Management Centre indicates that the severe weather has impacted over 11,800 people nationwide. The Centre reported that approximately 3,500 individuals are currently accommodated in 51 designated safe centres, while relief operations continue across the affected regions. The government had previously allocated more than Rs. 50 million to District Secretaries to support ongoing humanitarian assistance.
The extreme weather has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Eight people have lost their lives in weather-related incidents, with three additional injuries recorded. One person remains unaccounted for following the disaster. The dual nature of the hazards—both flooding and landslides—has complicated relief efforts, requiring coordinated responses across multiple districts to address immediate shelter, safety, and aid requirements.
The additional funding represents an effort to scale up support mechanisms as rescue and relief operations continue in the affected communities.
