Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesha Tharanga has returned to the top of the world rankings following his winning performance at the Diamond League competition in Lausanne, Switzerland, overtaking Germany's Julian Weber.
Rumesha Tharanga has reclaimed the world's number one ranking in men's javelin throw, according to the latest global standings. The Sri Lankan athlete holds 1,363 ranking points, positioning him 21 points ahead of Germany's Julian Weber, who now sits in second place with 1,342 points.
Tharanga's return to the top came after a strong performance at the 12th leg of the Diamond League athletics series held in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 21. He secured first place at the event with a throw of 88.14 meters. According to reports, Weber had previously occupied the top ranking position but withdrew from the Lausanne competition at the last moment, which contributed to the shift in standings.
The achievement marks a significant moment for the Sri Lankan athlete, who is also a Commonwealth Games gold medalist. He won gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a throw of 89.75 meters. India's Neeraj Chopra, who mounted a competitive challenge to Tharanga at the Diamond League event, currently ranks sixth globally with 1,301 points, while Grenada's Anderson Peters holds third place.
