Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodharagama today remanded the son of the former Minister of Justice, a Samagi Jana Bala Shakti (SJB) constituency organiser and another person until July 3 on charges of allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 120 million from the wife of underworld group leader Nathun Chinthaka Wickramaratne, known as 'Harak Gatta'. The Magistrate also directed the Prisons Department to issue necessary orders regarding the security of the suspects. A certificate under Section 149 of the Penal Code, signed by the Director General of the Commission for the Investigation of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), was submitted to the court. According to this certificate, there should be expedient circumstances for granting bail to the suspects. However, the Magistrate, observing that no such special circumstances were disclosed on behalf of the suspects, ordered their remand. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has informed the court that the suspects received the bribe amount in Dubai in 2023, after promising to protect the life of 'Harak Gatta', who was in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Specifically, the Commission further noted that the bribe was received on the pretext of removing the detention orders against the suspect, transferring him from the Galle Busa High Security Prison to another prison, and making arrangements for his release from investigations and legal proceedings against him.
