Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called on the government to ensure justice for victims of financial fraud, urging authorities to prioritize depositors affected by the collapse of licensed finance companies and accelerate legal action against those responsible. Speaking in Parliament, Premadasa said thousands of depositors had suffered due to irregularities within licensed finance companies, citing the collapse of Central Investments and Finance PLC (CIFL), where nearly 4,200 depositors were affected after the company’s licence was revoked. Premadasa said depositors should be given priority during the liquidation process instead of being placed behind liquidation costs, Central Bank dues and other liabilities. If that was not possible, he urged the government to introduce a special relief programme for depositors, including support for lost deposits and interest income. He also highlighted the plight of more than 1,000 depositors linked to Nation Lanka Finance, alleging that the company and its predecessor entities had continued to collect deposits despite regulatory restrictions. He claimed legal proceedings were moving too slowly and called on authorities to fully investigate those responsible and ensure justice for affected depositors. Premadasa said the government had a responsibility to properly enforce the law and protect victims of financial crimes. (Newswire)
