A recreational cricket team from California recently completed a memorable three-week tour of Sri Lanka, playing nine matches at iconic venues while exploring the island's attractions and cultural landmarks.
The San Francisco Bay Area Select XI concluded an extensive tour of Sri Lanka this month, spending three weeks traversing some of the island's most renowned cricket grounds. The touring party, which exceeded 40 members and included players' family members, played nine matches across venues such as the P. Sara Oval, NCC, Asgiriya, and the Radella ground.
Most squad members shared a common background, having played junior cricket in South Asia and other regions before relocating to the United States, where their mutual passion for the sport led them to form the touring group. The team faced a diverse range of opposition, including former Test player Sanjeewa Ranatunga, several former First Class cricketers, and emerging domestic prospects. When injuries necessitated additional support, former Sri Lanka Under-19 and Sri Lanka 'A' player Yashoda Lanka joined the squad to assist.
Beyond competitive play, the tour emphasized cultural exchange and relationship-building. The visitors met several of Sri Lanka's cricketing legends, including Anura Tennekoon, Chaminda Vaas, and Sanath Jayasuriya. The group also dined with World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga and batting star Aravinda de Silva. Wicketkeeper batter Sudip Shah stood out during the tour, accumulating nearly 300 runs across matches.
Despite mixed results on the field, tour organizers stressed that competitive success was not the primary aim. The team departed expressing deep affection for Sri Lanka's natural beauty and the hospitality extended by local communities, with members pledging to return for future visits. The tour reflects broader interest in cricket development within emerging markets such as the United States, which observers believe could help balance India's dominant influence in global cricket.
