A conference focusing on enforced disappearances is scheduled to take place in Jaffna on August 30, coinciding with the International Day of the Disappeared. The Northeast Forced Disappearances Association has organized the international gathering at the Father Selva Art Hall in Jaffna to mark the occasion.
Civil society activists have expressed concern about potential interference with the event. Speaking at a media briefing held at Matara Media Organisation, Sabarethinam Sivayoganathan, a civil society activist from Mullaitivu district, stated that certain groups may attempt to undermine the conference through protests. He called for such efforts to be avoided and halted, characterizing them as attempts to diminish the event's purpose and impact.
The conference is expected to address the history of enforced disappearances in the region, with activists framing the issue as connected to broader historical grievances affecting Tamil-speaking communities.
