Government and government-approved private schools across Sri Lanka will close for the August holidays tomorrow, with operations resuming on September 7 following the conclusion of the first phase of the third school term.

Government and government-approved private schools will shut down tomorrow for the August holiday period, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education. The closure marks the end of the first phase of the third school term for Sinhala and Tamil medium institutions.

The reopening date for most schools has been set for September 7, when the second phase of the third term will commence. This phase is scheduled to continue through December 4, 2026. However, Muslim schools operate on a different calendar, with their first phase concluding on September 2, slightly later than other schools.

The Ministry also noted that the 2026 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination will take place during the holiday period, running from August 10 to September 5, 2026. This examination schedule will overlap with the school closure period, suggesting that Advanced Level candidates will need to sit for their examinations during the break.
