Authorities are searching for a 19-year-old who disappeared in the Kalu Ganga river near Horana after being caught in strong currents while bathing with friends.
A rescue operation is underway to find a teenager who went missing in the Kalu Ganga river near the Naragala Bridge in Horana on Tuesday evening. The 19-year-old, identified as a resident of the Yala area, was among three friends who arrived at the location around 7:30 p.m. to bathe in the river.
According to police accounts, the youth entered the water and was rapidly swept away by powerful currents. A second friend immediately attempted a rescue by jumping into the river but also found himself struggling against the current before managing to reach the riverbank safely.
Following notification to Horana Police, officers initiated an investigation at the scene. Police Marine Division lifesaving teams were scheduled to begin a systematic search of the river on Wednesday morning. Authorities noted that the area is known for hazardous water conditions and the presence of crocodiles in the vicinity. In response to these concerns, local residents and the missing youth's companions maintained bonfires along the riverbank through the night.
The Horana Police continue their investigation into the incident as search efforts proceed.
