Security forces have been deployed to Mahara Prison following an incident that resulted in one death and multiple injuries. Over 100 inmates have been transferred to facilities across the country.
Enhanced security measures remain in place at Mahara Prison as authorities respond to unrest among the inmate population. Police Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler confirmed that personnel from the Special Task Force and other specialised police units have been deployed to reinforce security at the facility.
The prison authorities have suspended visitor access for the next two days, citing damage to the inmates' meeting area. The Department of Prisons attributed the decision to physical harm sustained during the recent disturbances.
One inmate, a 33-year-old prisoner, died during a clash that occurred two days prior to the current security operation. Eight other individuals injured in the same incident are receiving medical treatment at Ragama Teaching Hospital. In response to the unrest, 104 prisoners have been transferred to seven other facilities, including prisons in Dumbara, Welikada, Boossa, Kalutara, Badulla, Polonnaruwa, and Batticaloa. Authorities have posted the names of transferred inmates near the main entrance.
