Sri Lankan authorities have intensified security measures at all prisons nationwide and launched investigations into suspected organised involvement in recent prison disturbances.
The Department of Prisons has confirmed that heightened security arrangements remain active across all 33 correctional facilities in the country, with personnel from the Police Special Task Force, regular police, and military forces stationed at these institutions. Officials stated that these measures are being continuously reviewed to maintain prison system integrity.
Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ruwan Senarath indicated that investigations are examining whether organised groups coordinated the recent clashes that occurred at multiple prisons. Authorities have noted suspicious circumstances surrounding some incidents, including the presence of inmate relatives near prison perimeters during disturbances, suggesting potential external coordination.
Officials are also investigating whether these incidents represent attempts to establish control or influence within the prison system. Senarath referenced claims made during a meeting by Johnston Fernando alleging that MP Namal Rajapaksa holds significant sway over prison operations, linking recent developments to broader concerns about institutional influence.
In response to these concerns, the President has directed the establishment of a coordinated security mechanism involving all armed forces and law enforcement agencies. This unified approach aims to ensure comprehensive security coverage across the prison network and enable rapid response to future incidents.
