Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to India has met with India's Chief Election Commissioner to discuss strengthening institutional ties between the two countries' election management bodies through capacity-building and best practice exchanges.

Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to India, Mahishini Colonné, held discussions with India's Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi on 27 July to explore expanded electoral cooperation between the two nations. The meeting underscored the shared democratic foundations connecting Sri Lanka and India, including their commitment to constitutional governance and established electoral systems.

During the meeting, both sides identified opportunities for institutional collaboration between the Election Commission of Sri Lanka and the Election Commission of India. The High Commissioner highlighted that Sri Lanka's early adoption of universal adult franchise and India's status as the world's largest electoral democracy represent significant collective experience in democratic administration. These complementary strengths, officials suggested, could support meaningful knowledge exchange and capacity development.

Discussions centred on concrete mechanisms for deepening ties, including training programmes for election officials, technical exchanges, and ongoing dialogue regarding emerging challenges in electoral administration. The meeting also referenced productive engagement between the two election commissions during the India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM) 2026, indicating existing collaborative frameworks that could be expanded.

The High Commissioner expressed confidence that strengthened cooperation between the two Election Management Bodies would reinforce the broader partnership between Sri Lanka and India. Both sides appeared committed to formalising collaborative arrangements beyond ad hoc exchanges, suggesting a shift toward institutionalised electoral cooperation in the region.
